Very Interesting -

Distance Run: 0 Miles - The weather has been crappy all day but we did have some good thunderstorms worth a watch - lots of lightning and thunder. :)
Other Exercise: None - was too busy watching the storms

I happened to see a couple of rather interesting shows on the Discovery Channel this evening. The first one was titled "Wild Child: The Story of Feral Children". This one told about children who had received severe neglect (abandoned - some being raised by dogs) and the developmental challenges that resulted from it. According to what researchers have been able to figure out, those who don't learn language by the age of about twelve more than likely never will be able to learn it. They are able to understand emotion and develop a simple vocabulary but never learn to the same capacity of your average person who wasn't neglected. The bottom line was that the neglect deprived the brain of the much needed stimulation it needs for certain developmental processes to happen. When that stimulus isn't received, the brain starts to whittle away and turn to useless "mush".

The second show was called "Brainman". This show was about a 26 year old guy from England who had the ability to do complex mathematical computations in his head with ease (he could calculation Pi out to over 22,000 decimal places!). He also had the ability to learn a new language in a weeks time. The thing that was very unique about him is that although he showed signs of autism when he was a child, he was able to suppress them and live a relatively "normal" life. For the first time, there was someone who had extreme brilliance and was able to explain what was going on in his brain. From what he said, math problems weren't done in the conventional calculating way in his mind but instead each number had a shape/landscape visual. Rather than sitting there and figuring in the typical "number" sort of way most people do, the landscapes would just come to him.

Otay, it's getting late and I need to be off to bed.

Til next time.....
