Pomp And Circumstance

Exercise: None yet other than running across the hall periodically to help Mr. Monkey with this and that.

So this past weekend my mom and I went to Kansas City once again. One of my second cousins graduated from high school and we went down to attend her party. While we were there (which wasn't long since we left here Saturday and came back on Sunday), we also spent a lot of time with my auntie.

As usual, I did all the city driving (my mom doesn't like having to try and navigate with all the crazy drivers) so I basically became a chauffer for my mom and 75 year old auntie. Let me just tell you that when those two get together, they can be worse than teenagers but I absolutely love spending time with them both becuase they're both just a trip to be with.

My mom and I also got to meet auntie's 84 year old boyfriend that she's been seeing for quite a while. He's a nice, sweet, and very genuine guy although I must admit I have a hard time putting him together with my aunt. I think it's because he seems pretty laid back and kind of "small town" whereas my aunt is a "city girl". Not that it really matters since they seem to make each other happy.

The boyfriend did give me a good laugh though. During the time we spent with him, he turned to me and asked, "So, what school do you go to?" LOL I said, "I'm WAAAAY out of school. This year marks 15 from high school and 11 from college." I honestly think the guy was a little taken aback that I'm as old as I am and it's not like he doesn't see well. My auntie said he has 20/20 vision.

After he got over his mild shock about my age, my auntie mentioned to him that I had lived in England for a time and that I married an Englishman. I was surprised because when he asked me where Chi was from and I told him, he actually knew of the city. Most people don't and typically the only way for them to get any idea of where it is is to relate it to the location of London. Turns out the boyfriend faught in WW1 and had spent some time in England and even in the town where Chi grew up so of course we had to have a little chat about that too. ;)

As for the graduation party we went to on Sunday - it was much different than the ones I remember going to when I was that age. First of all, my second cousin and her best friend actually had their party together at the friend's house. Interesting way of doing things but also a good idea financially I would suppose. They also had tons of food and photos from throughout their lives everywhere to look at. Oh and the party lasted from 2 - 6. Now when I graduated from high school in 1992, you had a party with a window of about 2 hours and typically all that was served was cake and punch. I also don't remember attending any or my own having the picture thing either. My how things have changed.

I also determined that the girls who used to give me shit through school about my clothes (I refused to be one of their sheep and caught a lot of flack for it) still just kind of make me want to vomit. Many of the kids that showed up at the party were like those girls. They all wore the "latest" clothes and had to be looking "just right". I swear they all looked alike and there was no individuality. What the hell is the fun in that?

Anyway, the thing that really made me want to toss my cookies was hearing one of them saying something to the effect of, "Oh I just can't believe this is it" blah blah blah. I couldn't help but whisper under my breath, "Honey, this is only the beginning. Wait until you get 10+ years down the road." She then was telling some of her friends about what she was doing for the summer. One of the things she mentioned was a European trip. It was then that I realized just what it was that gagged me about the superficial sort of people. It's how they talk about subjects like this trip in a way that comes off as I'm trying to make it sound like a chore to cover up for the fact that I'm really bragging. All I could do was roll my eyes when I heard her going on about it all. Yep, I know I'm a bitch but I can't help it.

There was one rather humorous moment. I have a second cousin by marriage (her father married my cousin who is also the mother of the cousin who the party was for) whom my mom and I hadn't seen in at least ten years. Although she's definitely gained some weight, I knew exactly who she was. My mom, on the other hand, didn't. As my mom and I are getting some food, M comes walking up and starts talking to us. The whole time, my mother has no clue who she is. It wasn't until my auntie said something a bit later that my mom realized who she actually was. LOL

Sorry...I'm again lost for a "something different" tidbit today and time is short- DEAL!

Til next time....
