Governor Perry you've been a very naughty monkey!
Exercise: 200 crunches, 60 leg lifts, 30 squats, and 30 push ups. Almost made it out for a run last night but the wind was still blowing a little too much considering the temperature.
Well, it seems Governor Perry from Texas has decided to take a page out of old Dubya's book by doing whatever the hell he wants regardless of how many people oppose him. This past Friday he signed an executive order requiring all schoolgirls entering 6 th grade (basically ages 11 & 12) be vaccinated against HPV starting this fall. This is just assinine in my opinion and fear mongering to get people's money at best. Personally, I think a decision like this is best left in the hand's of the parents. Now granted they can opt out but it has to be for religious or philisophical reasons and there's a bunch of red tape to do it.
I can understand the thought of wanting to keep people safe and healthy but anyone who knows anything about HPV will tell you that although it's very frequent, the number of cases which actually turn into cervical cancer are very small. In fact, from some of the research I've done, cancer rates have been declining for quite some time and this one in particular ranks as one of the lowest in frequency. Based on what I've read on the MySpace political forum, it seems to be bringing back that old myth about being able to catch STDs from toilet seats. Now while it's possible in theory given the perfect conditions, there has yet to be a documented case of it actually happening. Oh and damn those people who put this fear in some women's minds. May you forever find yourself sitting on a wet seat when using a public toilet. Some of us don't believe that shit and we're tired of having to use toilets after those who do since they hover and piss all over the seats but don't wipe it up.
The other real questionable part of Perry's actions are his connections to Merck. That just seems like a total conflict of interest to me. If that isn't enough, this particular vaccine costs $360 which must be paid out of pocket for those receiving the shots. Now even though many insurance companies might cover this, we have to remember here there are a staggering number of people who don't have insurance due to the fact that it's so damn expensive. Yep, someone's definitely getting paid.
To sum it up, I'm glad I don't live in Texas and hopefully even though Merck is trying to get every state to do this, this bullshit will never make its way to Iowa.
And now for something completely different.....
I watched a show on TLC last night that I found very interesting and think shows very well that true love does in fact conquer all. If I remember correctly the title of the show was My Unique Family and last night was its debut. The first episode focused on a family in which the father was transitioning from male to female. Rather than the wife taking the children and leaving like many people might, this particular one stayed and they are making things work. Although I can't say for sure how I would react if I were in that situation, I could fully understand where she was coming from when she she mentioned having a connection with the other person that just couldn't be thrown away because the package they came in changed.
Well, that's it for me today.
Til next time....
