Up up and away

Exercise: Cleaning house

Yesterday after I got off work at noon, I came home for a little while and then left for my salon appointment in Ames. As I mentioned before, the dorms which were imploded were on the route that I take to get there. Although I hadn't lived there and only visited a handful of times when my friend lived there, it was weird driving by and seeing two huge piles of rubble where they once stood. It also made me a little sad. I think it's because it was like an end of an era that included my time at ISU.

The other thing that was also weird was that in order to get to the salon from the lot I walk in, I have to walk by this little creek where a dead body was found the same day the buildings came down. I talked to Doug (the guy who does my hair) about it and he told me that two of the women on his staff were there when it was discovered. He said that they were coming into work when this guy approached them and asked to use their cell phone to call 911. They told the guy no because they thought he was joking around but then the guy told them to go look for themselves. Sure enough....there was a body. From what Doug said, the guy who died was legally blind and supposedly had come out of a bar, gone down to this area most likely to pee (seems to be a popular area for the bar flies to do that), fell, hit his head, and landed face down in the water where he drowned. Just a sad story all the way around.

After I got my hair cut, I came back home and then got ready to go to my parents' house so I could visit with them, my cousin, her two daughters that came with her, and my eldest nephew. My sister and second eldest nephew were there too but they couldn't stay long so I didn't get to visit much with them. It was the first day of the National Balloon Classic (used to be the National Balloon Championship until they decided to move) and my parents live across the highway from the field so the traffic was sort of crazy but I still made good time.

Some of the balloons hit the air about 7 and flew east of the field so we all had a perfect view of them. A little later on, some more went up "off site" and flew right over the house which was neat for my cousin because it's been awhile since she has visited during the balloon days.

When it started to get dark, some of the balloonists geared up again for what they call the Night Glo. It's where they keep the inflated balloons on the ground and then have them all "burn" at once so they are lit up. What's really neat is now they actually let the spectators out on the field so they could get right up next to the balloons. I'm not sure when they started doing that but I was kinda surprised they did. I mean it seems like it would be a huge insurance liability risk but maybe not. Who knows.

Otay. It's getting late and I need to be off so I can get to bed. Gotta be up earlish in the morning so Brett and I can get on the road to Steph's place and head towards the Bryan Adams/Def Lep show in Davenport. Hopefully I will be able to get some good pics. ;)
