And the winner is????

Miles Run: 2 - Spring has sprung and there are WAY too many bugs! ICKY! ICKY! ICKY!

Yesterday morning I emailed the guy at the company downtown who made me the job offer to ask him for another day to think about it. I did this because I knew I had a performance review with my current employer later that day and I thought I would give them the chance to "bid" for me. Granted I don't like some of the things that go on there or the way the company in general is moving, however, I really like the banter that goes on between the people in my office and I wasn't sure I wanted to give that up.

Anyway, the review went ok although my supervisor told me a few things that really just kind of pissed me off. The first thing had to do with the way she could rate us. We started an online review system which like all of those things, has its limitations. What's worse is that she said she wasn't allowed to give 4s (a perfect rating) on several categories (something dictated by corporate). If she did, the review would be rejected and she would have to do it again. All I could think is WTF??? What's even more stupid is that the way the thing was written, it was basically impossible to improve. She said some changes would be made but my guess is that they will be worthless as usual.

The second thing that just dug at me was what she told me the business manager I work with said. This is the guy that from what my friend told me was beside himself because I might leave yet he told my supervisor he didn't like that I at times would tell him to do something himself because it wasn't my job and that I didn't "go that extra mile". EXCUSE ME??? Hearing that really made my blood boil! First of all the last time I remember telling the guy that I wouldn't do something because it wasn't my job is when he asked me to get him some tea. THAT is NOT in my job description and never has been so the HELL if I am going to do it. And this shit about not going the "extra mile" - PLEASE!!! I'm always doing extra shit for him along with making things easier and more efficient for him. For example he and the regional manager for our biggest client came to me and asked me to put together some "high tech" order forms for them - the ones which were so good and praised by the regional and his superiors that I am up for an award. I gladly accepted the challenge not because I knew there would be a little money in it for me but because I enjoy doing that sort of thing. Then there are the little "behind the scene" things that I'm sure he doesn't understand which I do that allow me to give him answers to his questions in a matter of seconds rather than hours. Oh and let's not forget the fact that I went in on a day that I took off to take care of some stuff so that the regional for the afore mentioned client would make his bonus. Even though he said he would take care of me, I got a lousy $100 when I know more than likely the regional probably made a few grand.

This brings me up to the next gripe I have from this meeting with my supervisor. I had told her I felt rather burned by the whole situation of coming in on my day off and then getting such a small reward for it. It's not even so much the issue of the money but more the principle of the matter. Anyway, I guess she had said something to the business manager about that and also asked him if I had made any mention of how much money I wanted for it. He told her that I didn't. I couldn't believe it! I don't know if the guy lied on purpose or if he really just didn't remember but I was completely dumbfounded. My guess, given his personality, is that he just wasn't really paying attention like he often does when we discussed the matter. He was too focused on convincing me to do the task that he completely missed the details. I told my supervisor that it was a bunch of hogwash and I did in fact state what I thought would be considered as "taking care of me" ($500) which is what the regional said he would do. I told her it's not that I actually expected to get that much but I didn't think it was unreasonable to expect two days pay since that is the amount of time it took for me to earn the time I spent working on my vacation. She agreed and she too made a comment about the regional more than likely getting a few thousand as he bonus.

I also found out in this interview that I may be asked once again to train my coworkers on Microsoft Office products. Now there is something that I know I would enjoy doing although if I am going to do it, I would like to be able to set up my own "curriculum" rather than teaching the preset crap that corporate sends out which is mostly useless for those I work with.

Toward the end of our meeting, I pitched the idea of a raise. I basically told my boss that I had a job offer but if the company would at least match the minimum I would be making there, I would be willing to stay. Well, to make a long story short, she said she would see what she could do and this afternoon she pulled me into her office and said that it had been approved. WHOOHOO!!! 13.5% pay jump - gotta love it!

Alrighty, I'm outta here.

Til next time......
